On Sunday, July 28, the Medical School community lost one of its dearest members. Theodore “Ted” Thompson, M.D., passed away suddenly, just 10 days after celebrating his 70th birthday.
Thompson was a current professor in the Department of Pediatrics and lead academic advisor to the Committee on Student Scholastic Standing in the Office of Medical Education. He was a valued faculty advisor who impacted and encouraged many generations of medical students, residents, and fellows.
Thompson possessed the gift of extreme congeniality and served as a role model for professionalism in medicine. He was an influential figure who advocated tirelessly for issues of student support, scheduling, and career development. In addition, he is the author of numerous abstracts and has been published in such journals as Pediatrics, Pediatric Research, and Journal of Pediatrics.
Upon graduating from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1969, Thompson received his Match Day letter announcing his residency in pediatrics at the University of Minnesota. This set the course of his professional career and launched his involvement with the Medical School as a member of our faculty for 42 years.
After completing his residency and fellowship training at the University of Minnesota, Thompson joined our faculty in 1975. He then served as director of the Department of Pediatrics’ Division of Neonatology from 1977-1991 and held other leadership roles across the Academic Health Center, University of Minnesota Physicians, and University of Minnesota, Fairview. He recently served as director of clinical education for the Medical School.
His many colleagues will remember him for his good nature as much as they will recall his meaningful contributions to our medical school. Ted Thompson will be sincerely missed.
His obituary can be found online at the Star Tribune’s website. Colleagues and friends are encouraged to sign the guest book before August 30, 2013. An extended obituary is also available from the Star Tribune.
A service and reception will be held at the Lakewood Memorial Chapel and Garden Mausoleum at noon on Friday, August 2, 2013. Seating is limited.
The University of Minnesota will honor his life at a later date.
Memorials can be made in the form of a donation to the Ashlyn Jenna Patton Fund, which was established by Thompson and his wife in 2005 to honor the memory of their granddaughter. The fund was established to enrich the University of Minnesota Medical School by providing a permanent source of income for the education and training of health care professionals within the Division of Neonatology of the Department of Pediatrics, and the health care professional staff working in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit or Special Care Units within the Fairview Health System.
Donations can be made online (fund #11055) or by mail: c/o the University of Minnesota Foundation, 200 Oak Street SE, Suite 500, Minneapolis, MN 55455.
