Research continually shows breast milk is best for babies, but nursing can be stressful for mothers. There are a few great ways to get off on the right foot, so we checked in with Emily Borman-Shoap, M.D., director of newborn care at University of Minnesota Amplatz Children’s Hospital, to learn more.

“Amplatz Children’s Hospital is designated Baby-Friendly. This means we are passionate about providing children and parents with the care they need to get off on the right foot, especially when it comes to breast feeding,” said Borman-Shoap.

Here’s what Borman-Shoap tells new moms both in her office and on the unit:

Top tips for getting started

  • Attempt breastfeeding within the first hour of your child’s life, even if you have a cesarean section.
  • Take every opportunity to feed a newborn to help build your milk supply. Keep your child in your room while at the hospital to start learning early hunger cues.
  • Ask for help if you’re unsure about positioning or latch.
  • Steer clear of bottles and pacifiers for the first 2-3 weeks, until your nursing relationship is established.
  • Remember to relax, get comfortable and stay hydrated.
  • Don’t be too hard on yourself: “Whatever breast milk you are able to provide for your baby is wonderful,” said Borman-Shoap.

Common questions

In addition to the tips above, we asked Borman-Shoap to answer some common questions when it comes to nursing.

How can I involve my partner in feeding and bonding while I’m nursing my baby?

During the first few weeks, mothers should be nursing to develop the breastfeeding routine. During that time, partners can bond by taking the baby just after feeding to rock and soothe.

After your connection is established, begin using a breast pump to express milk and offer it occasionally in a bottle. Encourage your partner to get involved. This will allow you some time away, as well as give others a chance to feed your child.

How long should I breast feed my child?

When possible, it’s best for your child to receive only breast milk for the first six months. Complimentary solid foods, such as pureed baby food and baby cereal, should be introduced at around six months.

What should I do when I return to work? Is it still possible to breast feed my child?

Yes, it’s still possible to continue nursing your child after returning to work. Different mothers encounter different challenges so it is always a good idea to discuss the upcoming challenges with your pediatrician. This gives you an opportunity to discuss options, create a plan and receive support. A good breast pump will help a lot, as well.

The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative

Launched in 1991, the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative is a global project from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). The goal is encouraging and recognizing optimal care for newborn feeding and maternal-child bonding.

Hospitals undergo rigorous training and assessment before earning the label. While most hospitals offer support and guidance for mothers, Baby-Friendly facilities have made extensive efforts to support mothers and babies through policy and procedural changes, staff training and a collaborative approach among specialties.
